Roselle Rouge Hibiscus
Roselle Rouge Hibiscus
Hibiscus sabdariffa
This stunning roselle variety produces large calyxes that can be used fresh or dried in teas, jams, and even as a cranberry substitute (we love treating them like natural sour patch kids and eat them plain!). The calyxes also make a great tart red food colorant. We've been enjoying them paired with sacred basil leaves for a sweet and tangy herbal tea.
Plant roselle seeds 6-8 weeks before your last frost date, and transplant them in a spot that gets full sun. If you're in an area with a longer growing season, you can direct sow after your last frost. Since the plants can grow large, be sure to space them at least 2 feet apart. Suitable for zone 7-10.
The seed for this crop was grown by Laarni of Petal Mettle Flower farm on the north shore of Oβahu. After growing multiple varieties, this is her preferred. The first two photos of this variety were taken by Laarni.
