Common Rue

Common Rue

$4.00

(Ruta graveolens)

This evergreen perennial is a larval host plant to multiple species of swallowtail butterfly. The beautiful blue-green foliage and uniquely shaped flowers are long lasting in floral arrangements, and can be harvested throughout the year in our region.

Direct sow seeds in late winter or early spring, or start indoors and transplant in early spring. Once established, it is exceedingly drought tolerant.

Like parsnips, carrots, figs, and citrus, common rue can cause phytophotodermatitis in some individuals with sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin, or a history of developing rashes when coming into contact with plant oils, make sure to wear gloves when working with common rue. Most people are not affected.
