Western Sea-Purlsane
Western Sea-Purlsane
(Sesuvium verrucosum)
Unique perennial plant with sparkling blue-green succulent leaves and bright rose-pink starry flowers. Interestingly for you botany nerds and plant enthusiasts, the flower’s “petals” are actually modified sepals (the leaves that typically surround flower petals). Western sea-purslane can form a wide mat or cascade up to 6 feet! A beautiful curtain can be formed if allowed to grow over a pot’s edge or patio fence, for example. They are easy to clip to desired size. With less water the plants will form tighter and more upright clumps of succulent foliage. Leaves are edible, and can provide a little salty snack.
Western sea-purslane is a highly adaptable native plant that can tolerate drought, alkaline conditions, salt, poor soils, and flooding. Our plants are cold hardy to at least -10 degrees Fahrenheit, USDA zone 6. We have had success starting these seeds with bottom heat and transplanting later on, but you could also direct sow them mid to late spring.
