This Slovakian P. somniferum is our favorite breadseed poppy. The flowers produce large beautiful seed pods that remain closed at the crown which prevents seeds from self-sowing in your garden. Poppies with this feature are referred to as "rattle poppies".

Like other breadseed poppies, this variety makes bees lose their minds. As you can see in this picture, the bees literally line up to get some of the nectar. The seeds from this variety are strikingly white, and have a lovely nutty flavor.

Direct sow in early spring. We sow ours between late snowstorms in February or early March.
