Moon Carrot
Moon Carrot
(Seseli gummiferum)
Some things seem too good to be true: The existence of kittens, Elizabeth Taylor’s performance in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, dark sky parks in Southern Utah… and Moon Carrot.
This biennial flower will make you audibly gasp when it blooms in its second year. If Hayao Miyazaki animated a carrot flower, and it came to life, this would be it. Pure magic. In the first year it will form a beautiful mound of blue-green dissected leaves which are beautiful in their own right. The blooms make stunning cut flowers, and the dried seed heads are also beautiful in arrangements.
Direct sow seeds in autumn through early spring. They like to germinate when temperatures are still low, and prefer a period of cold stratification to increase germination success. They are fairly drought tolerant, and are great at self-seeding once you get a population established. Thin plants to 1-2’. USDA zone 5-9, and prefers well draining soil.
