Stardust Iceplant
Stardust Iceplant
Delosperma floribunda
Perennial edible succulent that forms a mounding groundcover of thick, narrow, evergreen leaves and stems. Grows 3-6” in height by up to a foot and a half in spread. Blooms prolifically from late spring to fall.
The flowers form a carpet of glossy lilac pink petals with bright white centers and a spot of yellow anthers (pollen producing parts) in the middles. The tender stems, new flowers and leaves have a pleasant juicy, toothsome texture and a fresh spinach like flavor. Can be propagated by seed or by cuttings.
Pollinators of many kinds love these flowers!
Grow these iceplants in full sun to part shade in drier, well-draining soils. In areas of high intensity sunlight, such as in high elevations and low ambient humidity, iceplants seem to benefit from slightly more water.
USDA hardiness zones: 6-9 (Zone 5 with special attention to soil drainage and protection from winter wet and freezing winds.)
Start seeds by surface sowing and keeping moist and warm until germination. It can take 15-30 days for germination. Don’t grow in areas that this species is considered a noxious weed.
