(Asclepias tuberosa)
Beautiful orange-flowered milkweed with a wide native range across the United States and Canada. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils, and is drought tolerant once established. We love how these look when planted with purple wild flowers like desert bluebells or arroyo lupine.
We start seeds indoors and transplant after danger of frost has passed. Literature suggests cold stratifying the seeds for 4-6 weeks before planting, but we haven’t found that to be necessary. Alternatively, you can direct sow the seeds 1/8” deep in autumn or winter and allow them to sprout on their natural schedule in spring.
Great pollinator plant and is a larval host to monarch, queen, and grey hairstreak butterflies.
