Yerba Mansa
Yerba Mansa
(Anemopsis californica)
Anemopsis is a monotypic genus with californica being its sole species. In its native range (Southwest United States and Mexico), yerba mansa prefers wet soils in hot arid landscapes, but also grows beautifully in a moderately watered garden if given full sun. It forms a deep taproot, which allows it to become seasonally drought tolerant. When happy, it will form above ground runners which will quickly fill in open garden space.
The roots have antimicrobial properties, and have been used in traditional medicine to treat everything from athletes foot to yeast infections. The entire plant is very aromatic, and can be used in natural potpourri mixes.
Germination is heat dependent, and can take several weeks. Start your seeds indoors on a heated seed starting mat, and then transplant seedlings outdoors after your last frost date. They can be successfully grown in container gardens.
